Here are the available positions and descriptions:

SECRETARY

Coordinates with President to schedule meetings and perform tasks for the good of the entire organization--including the keeping of meeting minutes. Gathers and keeps calendars for all programs, and works with Communication Chair to ensure word gets out, and thank-you's sent. Also manages volunteer email/phone list. Serves as a resource to Program Chairs by getting the word out that volunteers are needed, and connecting volunteers with Program Chairs in need.

LECTURE SERIES CHAIR

Coordinates with faculty & BC staff on the year's program of lecures (4-5 annually). Ensures room, AV, hotel, dinner reservations are made, ensures lecturers are hosted properly, and lecturer is paid as agreed upon. Publicizes lectures to BC & Seattle design communities.

WORKSHOP CHAIRS

(we need 2 more Workshop Chairs--as this position is quarterly, or per workshop)

Coordinates with faculty & BC staff on the execution of 1-2 workshops (IDSA hosts 2 per quarter). Ensures room, AV, hotel, dinner reservations are made, and that the room is left as we found it, post-event. Collects payments for workshops and ensures workshop provider is paid and money deposited in IDSA account. Publicizes workshops to student community.

DEGREE SHOW CO-CHAIR

Works with faculty advisor to develop concept for and coordinates room reservations, AV equipment, food, and participants for event to be held during Spring quarter.** Publicizes event to student and design communities.

**This event is currently evolving with the addition of the BAA program. In the past, this has been a once-per-year event, however, this may transition to a 3-per-year event. This means, you would either be Chairing one of the 3 events, or Co-Chairing with another student on the Spring show. Even though we don't know the layout for next year yet...there is need here as this is not a one-person job! :)

*Michael Iannone is currently the Pacific Northwest A & D Technical Liaison and factory representative for DIRTT Environmental Solutions, a cutting edge company that manufacturers a sustainable architectural modular wall system and proprietary software. With his passion for architecture and design, and a focus on behavioral responses to the built environment he founded and was managing partner of the Iannone Group a TI design and consulting firm in Salt Lake City for 23 years. The firm specialized in interior architecture, modular construction, space planning, architectural design consulting and productivity enhancing design concepts.
Under his guidance the Iannone Group was involved in over 8 million square feet of commercial/ institutional projects including clients such as The Smithsonian Institute, Library of Congress, American Express, Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, Qwest, WordPerfect Corp, US Robotics, University of Utah and the State of Utah. He studied Architecture at the University of Florida and received a B.U.S degree in Architectural Psychology from the University of Utah. He has presented at Neocon, and national and regional meetings of IFMA, BOMA, NAIOP, and AIA.

I know some of you are looking for upper-division course options that don’t involve taking a studio class, and that fit into a nighttime class schedule. We’re preparing a course for this quarter that you might be interested in taking, and if there is enough interest to generate a decent enrollment (about 15 students minimum) you’re in luck.

This will be a “late-start” class that will give us time to build the class and prepare it. This will also be a “hybrid” course, involving some online contact, and the rest is studio/lecture time one night a week. As soon as we get final authorization, they’ll post the class.

Course Description: An exploration of methods generating and managing design concept and content, including creativity exercises, information collection, relational strategies, and process management.

Learning Activities:

The class will be presented as a series of lectures covering a dozen different methodologies of design, presented as a "Designer's Toolkit", followed by in-class and outside exercises to build familiarity with methodological applications. The class exercises will be collected in a book-style publication at the end of the class (fee required: $___) titled: "Explorations & Discoveries". Exercises and assignments will be both written and graphic.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will explore and become familiar with a variety of methods for generating creative design content on demand. Each student will identify a collection of methods, or a "Designer's Toolkit", with which they can generate and explore new ideas with confidence. Students will use hands-on exercises to develop a variety of design methods and learn how to be creative without waiting for "inspiration" to strike.

Neighborhood House High Point Center: A Revolution in Green Design

In celebration of the new Neighborhood House High Point Center the Seattle Architecture Foundation and Cascadia's Seattle Chapter are showcasing it with a FREE Hard Hat Tour on Monday, November 9th at 10:30a.m.

The 20,000 square foot project features the largest solar panel array atop a building in the entire state of Washington. 256 photovoltaic panels and a ground source heat pump will provide green energy to the center that is designed to meet LEED Gold standards.

Architects Sally Knodell, LEED AP and Matt Eaton with Environmental Works will give us a sneak peek at the Center and provide expertise on non-profit environmental design.

Dan Wheeler, FAIA is one of 6 principals of the 14 person architectural practice of Wheeler Kearns and is Professor of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has served as Interim Director of the UIC School of Architecture and The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. He previously worked in the Offices of Machado Silvetti Architects, Boston, and was a studio head at SOM Chicago. He is a Graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design.

The Pacific Place Shopping Center in downtown Seattle has a vacant store space with a particularly challenging configuration. Pacific Place is inviting the design community to join in a competition to generate ideas for effectively re-designing this space within the context of this mixed-use retail setting.

The space #220, is 7,749 square feet and is L-shaped. While large enough to house multiple tenants, the space has limited storefront that would make visibility and merchandising difficult for more than one tenant. Furthermore, the L-shape presents a challenge for driving customer traffic to the back of the space, in either a single -or multi-tenant configuration.

Pacific Place invites floor plan entries that successfully re-demise the space while adhering to the criteria provided.

NEWH Community Service Project

Each year for the past 10 years, the Northwest Chapter of NEWH has collected items needed by women who come to the YWCA Women's Shelter. These include essentials such as combs, brushes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand cloths, floss, etc. At the end of the year we deliver 100 bags to the YWCA to distribute to the women in their program. It is a wonderful way to give back to our community and help those who are at a low point in their lives.

This year we are asking for your help again. We have 100 bags ready to be filled. As you travel and stay in hotels please collect these items and help NEWH by donating them for this project. When you make your visit to your dentist call ahead and ask if they will put together toothbrushes or toothpaste for you to donate. Or, if you are working with a hotel that is re-branding ask if they will donate their old brand amenities. If you are unable to collect items cash contributions are always helpful as well.

Items can be brought to any NEWH meeting for collection, dropped off at the Designtex showroom in the Seattle Design Center, or let me know and I will make arrangements to pick them up. The "Amenity Bags" will be filled and delivered to the YWCA shelter late in December.

Studying for the New LEED Green Associate?

The Cascadia Region Green Building Council has a comprehensive all-day class coming up! Passing the LEED exam requires a working knowledge of LEED and green building, as well as the ability to apply that knowledge to LEED project situations. This study session provides a review of LEED project administration, the credits and points in each LEED category, and how they are applied on real projects. Homework problems challenge participants to develop a working understanding of the LEED system. Role play exercises will allow participants to practice applying LEED in the way they will be tested on the exam.

DESCRIPTION
Find out what you're A/V Tech doesn't want you to know!

Simplify operation and maintenance of audio/video devices, environmental controls and communication systems. Conference rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, stores, hotel and hospital rooms become more effective and efficient with integrated solutions.

In this one-hour course you will have the opportunity to:
1) understand the principles of an A/V Control System
2) learn about issues that must be considered when designing for a control system
3) observe the functional roles of each piece of a control system
4) learn how a control system can help achieve LEED points
5) see examples of an A/V Control System in Commercial applications

Shawn Brechbill (Director of AMX) and Sean McNeill (VP of Operations for AMX) will present this event in order to ensure that it is a huge success!

Seattle Central Community College is offering 3D Studio Max classes this summer. This is an advanced 3D modeling and rendering program, and one that many design firms use.

I know that lots of people have limited course selection during summer quarter, so this is a great opportunity to hone your 3D modeling and rendering skills.

Basics of 3D modeling and texturing. You see it used everywhere...from magazine covers, on TV, on the Internet, and in blockbuster movies and in architectural renderings. Learn how to navigate the interface, customize it, build objects from primitive objects and progress to more complex modeling techniques. Texture map objects. Bellevue College Needs Your Letter of Support!!

As many of you know, Bellevue College (formerly BCC) has been working on a new four-year degree in interior design. Our proposal has made it past the state legislature and is now on its way to the HEC board and state board of education. We've been asked to request letters of support from industry professionals and interior design educators to include in our proposal to the state.

Even a sentence or two on company letterhead would go a long way toward convincing the state that it will have made the right decision in approving the bachelor's degree.

IIDA Northern Pacific Chapter:
Student Competition Deadline

Due May 22nd (this Friday)

Eligibility: All eligible students must be currently enrolled in an associate or baccalaureate design curriculum in Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Alberta or British Columbia. Both graduating and non-graduating students are eligible to submit.

Judging: Each student will be judged on their ability to address the following design principles: problem solving skills, innovation, overall design and conceptual thinking, technical understanding of the solution presented, and overall presentation skills. A panel of professional designers will be judging the submitted projects.

Awards:
1st Place: $1500
2nd Place: $500

Winners will be announced at the Student Scholarship Critique and Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 29, 2009, from 6:00 to 7:30pm, location to be determined. Come and listen as the panel walks through their thoughts on each submission.

Format: Submit ONE project that represents your best work up to this point in your academic career on a maximum of 3 boards (size 11 x 17 inches). All project information must be included on the front of the boards. Include name, address, phone number, year in school, and school name on the backside.

Nickelsville Charette, Seattle WA

Along with SHARE, Tent City and Nickelsville residents, Architects
Without Borders-Seattle will have a charette to address some of the
issues residents are facing. They are looking at several sites around
the city for a more permanent location and would like to use AWB-S’s
expertise to come up with a master site plan to address mobile
residences for 1000 people, multi-purpose facilities for community
services including but not limited to; medical, job training, other
social service counseling, and public toilets, showers, dinning,
socializing. The Plan will assist Nickelsville in addressing city/
county ordinance issues involving, codes, encampment rulings/
regulations and other pertinent design related issues.

AWB-S will announce the charette date later in May. If you are

Kitchen / Bath online course offering

Central Washington University is offering online classes in residential Kitchen (FCSH 480) and Bath (FCSH 464) design this summer via Blackboard.

Each class is 4 credits and begins in June 22, ending in July 31, 2009.

Students will be given a project based on the NKBA Student Design Competition and will be encouraged to participate in the competition. This year's project is the remodel of the kitchen and bath of an arts and crafts residence. Students will learn how to respond to the design problem presented by the client and how to produce all the necessary technical drawings following NKBA guidelines.

It appears that Autodesk is offering the student community the opportunity to download AutoCAD 2010 with a 13-month license to use the software. This is different than a 30-day trial and I believe the license is free of charge for students registered with Autodesk, which one can do through the following site:
